Couples therapy and marriage counseling in Berkeley
Warm, Experienced Support For Your Relationship
Hello, I am Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years working with couples. Some of the Berkeley couples I meet already know they want to fix things. Others are not sure the marriage will make it, and they are quietly trying to decide. If that is where you are, you are not alone. You do not have to have it figured out before you come in. Part of my work is helping you get an honest read on what is actually possible here. I am currently taking new couples.
Couples Work Is My Specialty
Couples are what I do. Not a specialty I added on later, the actual center of my practice for 26+ years. When you have sat with this many couples, you develop something specific: a feel for the difference between a marriage that is genuinely stuck and one that is genuinely finished. From the inside, most couples cannot tell which one they are. A big part of what you are getting is 26+ years of knowing roughly where that line falls, and the honesty to tell you.
What Couples Are Weighing When They Reach Out
-
Whether this is a rough patch you can get through, or something that is really over
-
The same argument that keeps ending the same way
-
A slow drift into feeling more like roommates than partners
-
Resentment that built up quietly while one of you carried more
-
Trust that took a hit and has not fully come back
How We Will Work Together
Here is what I actually do in the room. I interrupt. When the two of you start down the argument you have had a hundred times, I stop it before it finishes, because you both already know how it ends. Then we back up to what each of you was really trying to say before it turned into a fight, and we try saying it a different way. I am not a referee keeping score, and I do not side with whoever talks loudest. I am the one making sure the quieter, truer thing finally gets said out loud.
I draw on the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Discernment Counseling. If you are truly undecided about staying, Discernment work is built for that exact spot, and its only goal is a clear-eyed decision you can both stand behind.
The First Stretch
You do not need to walk in with a speech ready. The first session is mostly me listening, one of you and then the other, until I understand the pattern you are caught in and the version each of you is living inside it. By the end I will tell you plainly what I am seeing and whether I think there is something here to work with. From there we usually meet weekly. Even couples who came in unsure tend to feel a little more solid ground under them within the first few weeks.
If You're About to Get Married
If a wedding is coming, this is a good time to do the work, and not because anything is wrong. The habits you build now are the ones you will run on for decades. It is far easier to sort out how you each handle money, family, and conflict before those patterns have hardened into who you are. Premarital sessions are some of the quietly most valuable work I do.
What Clients Say
"Somewhere along the way we became more like roommates. After years of that distance, I honestly wasn't sure we'd find our way back. But little by little we did, and it feels so good to be close again." — Berkeley
"I came in exhausted and honestly not sure we should stay together. Living in that uncertainty was draining. I needed an honest answer, and I walked out with real clarity and some peace about what came next." — Berkeley
"For years, telling my partner how I felt seemed to go nowhere. I never really felt heard. Once we learned how to listen without getting defensive, something finally shifted. I feel understood in a way I haven't in a long time." — Berkeley
Common Questions
How do we know if the relationship is still fixable?
That is often the first thing we figure out together. Most couples have more to work with than they can see from inside the stuck place.
Will you be honest with us, even when it's hard to hear?
Yes. I am warm, but I am direct. You are not paying me to nod along. You are paying me to tell you what I actually see and help you do something about it.
Do we have to dig through everything from the past?
No. We go into the past only where it is still driving the present. The focus is on changing the pattern you are living now, not relitigating every old fight.
What does starting look like?
Reach out for a short consultation. We will talk about what is going on and you can decide if I'm a good fit for you.
