Couples therapy Intensives

A Concentrated Path for Couples Ready to Do the Work

Hello, I'm Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years working with couples across California. Weekly therapy is the right pace for most couples. Some are at a point where an hour a week is not enough. Something has come to a head, a decision is looming, or you are tired of circling the same pattern for months and want to move through it faster.

Most often, an intensive is a path we choose together after we have already been working weekly, when it becomes clear that a more concentrated stretch would help. Some couples come to me specifically for an intensive, and that is welcome too. Either way, I take on only a small number, and only after we have talked and agreed it is the right fit.

Who an Intensive Is For

  • You are at a turning point and do not want to wait weeks between sessions

  • You want to work through a specific rupture, a betrayal, a crisis, a hard decision, with focus and momentum

  • The same fight or the same distance has gone on long enough that you want concentrated work, not another year of incremental steps

  • You value depth and privacy, and you want a process built around the two of you rather than a standard weekly schedule

How an Intensive Works

Every intensive is built around your situation, so no two look the same. In general it blends frequent virtual sessions through the week with periodic in-person days, a half day or a full day, where we do the deeper, sustained work that a single hour cannot hold. That rhythm repeats for as long as the work calls for it. The virtual sessions work with couples anywhere in California. The in-person days take place in a private setting, in a location arranged to suit you and me. The structure stays flexible and follows what you actually need, not a fixed template.

Couples Work Is My Specialty, Not a Sideline

I am a doctoral-level clinical psychologist, and couples have been the center of my practice for 26+ years. Intensive work asks a lot of a clinician, reading two people in real time, holding a hard moment without letting it spin out, and knowing when to push and when to slow down. That is exactly the work I have spent decades doing.

I draw on the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Discernment Counseling, and for individual work I draw on cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. Which of these I use depends on you and your relationship, I don't use a one size fits all approach.

We Start With a Conversation

Because I take only a few intensive couples at a time, we begin by talking. I want to understand what is going on and make sure an intensive is genuinely the right approach for you, rather than weekly work or something else. If it is a fit, we design it together, the rhythm, the in-person days, and what we are working toward.

Common Questions

How is an intensive different from weekly therapy?

Weekly therapy works in one-hour increments over months. An intensive compresses that into concentrated work, so you get momentum and depth quickly. It suits couples at a turning point or working through something specific, where waiting a week between sessions keeps stalling the progress.

What happens on the in-person days?

The in-person days are where we do the longer, sustained work, the kind that needs more than an hour and benefits from being in the room together. We slow down the hard moments, work them through in real time, and build the new pattern until it starts to hold.

Do you take every couple who asks?

No. Intensives are demanding, and they are not right for everyone. That is why we start with a conversation. If an intensive is not the best fit, I will tell you, and we will talk about other options.

How do we start?

Reach out through the form on this page and tell me a little about what is going on. If an intensive sounds like the right path, we will set up a conversation from there.

Getting Started

If some part of you is ready to stop circling and do the real work, an intensive may be the right path. Reach out through the form and tell me what is going on, and we will find out together whether this is the right fit for you.
