Therapy for Hedge Fund Professionals
Your year is a number, and everyone can see it. When the book is up, you're a genius; when it's down, you can't sleep, and either way the next print resets the scoreboard to zero. I'm Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years working with people whose self-worth got fused to their performance, including fund managers, traders, and analysts.
What Brings Fund Professionals In
Almost no one in this industry calls a therapist when things are fine. They call when the anxiety stops switching off after the close. When a drawdown starts feeling like a verdict on who they are. When the moods from the desk follow them home and the marriage is absorbing the volatility. When they realize they can't talk honestly at the firm, where weakness gets priced, and they've stopped talking honestly at home, where no one understands the work. That isolation is usually the real problem, and it's fixable.
This Is Therapy, Not Performance Coaching
Performance coaches work on your trading. I work on you. I'm a doctoral-level clinical psychologist, and the work we do reaches the things a decision framework can't: the anxiety underneath the discipline, the identity that rises and falls with the P&L, the family history that taught you your worth had to be earned daily. Better performance is usually a side effect. It's not the goal. You are.
When the Market Comes Home
Half the fund professionals I work with come in for the job and discover the real damage is at home: a spouse who's tired of the moods, kids who get the leftovers, a relationship running on logistics. I've spent 26+ years doing couples work, so when the marriage needs the attention, we don't have to refer out. We work on it.
How I Work
Active and direct. You won't get a therapist who nods for fifty minutes; that doesn't work on people who out-think everyone in the room. I'll tell you what I see, we'll get underneath it, and you'll have something to use, not just something to think about. Sessions are by video and fit around market hours.
What to Expect
First session, you talk, I ask sharp questions, and I give you my honest read: what's situational, what's older than the job, and what the work looks like. We meet weekly. People in this industry tend to make fast progress once they're actually honest with someone, because for most of them it's the first room with no scoreboard in it.
Common Questions
Do hedge funds really have therapists?
Some funds bring in performance psychologists for the desk. What I offer is different: private therapy that belongs to you, not your employer, and that covers your whole life rather than just your trading.
Is this performance coaching?
No. Coaching optimizes how you work. Therapy deals with what the work is doing to you, and what you brought to the work long before this job. Both have value; they're different tools.
My partner says I'm a different person during drawdowns. Can we work on that together?
Yes. Couples sessions are often where this work pays off most. The market's moods don't have to set the household's.
How does scheduling work with market hours?
Sessions are by video and we build around your hours, including early and late slots. Consistency is what matters, and we make it realistic.
