Warm, Experienced Help When the Marriage Looks Fine but Doesn't Feel Fine

Hello, I'm Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years working with couples. A lot of the people who find me look completely fine from the outside. Good careers. A nice life in San Diego. Friends who would never guess anything is wrong. And inside the marriage, one or both of you feels quietly alone. That gap between how it looks and how it feels is one of the most common reasons couples reach out. It is also very workable. I am currently accepting new couples.

Couples Work Is My Specialty

I am a doctoral-level clinical psychologist, and couples are not a side interest I fit in between other clients. They have been the center of my work for 26+ years. That focus matters most when the pattern is old, when anxiety or low mood has wound itself into the relationship, and with sharp, verbal couples who can talk circles around a therapist who is not paying close attention. Whatever the two of you are stuck in, I have almost certainly sat with a version of it, and I know where the movement usually is.

What Couples Come to Me For

  • You look happy to everyone else, and neither of you can say out loud how far apart you actually feel

  • Small things turn into big fights fast, and you cannot find the exit once it starts

  • The warmth and physical closeness have thinned out, and you miss it but do not know how to restart it

  • One of you carries most of the invisible work, and the resentment has started to leak into everything

  • You are honestly not sure anymore whether this is a rough stretch or the beginning of the end

How I Work

I am warm, and I am involved. I do not sit quietly and take notes while the two of you run the same fight you have at home. I step in. When the pattern starts up in front of me, I slow it to the exact moment it goes wrong, the tone that lands hard, the shrug, the shot fired back, and we try it another way, together, until the better version starts to stick. You leave with something to do, not just something to think about.

I draw on the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Discernment Counseling, and I choose among them based on the two people in the room. There is no single method that fits every couple, because there is no single kind of couple.

What to Expect

You do not need to prepare anything. In the first session, each of you tells me how you see it, and both versions get equal air. I will be honest about what I notice and what the work will take. We usually meet weekly at the start, scheduled around real life. Most couples notice the heat come down within a few weeks: fights end sooner, repair comes faster, fewer topics feel like landmines.

Before You're Married

If you are getting married, the strongest time to do this work is before the wedding, not after the first big blowup. Money, in-laws, and the different ways you each handle conflict are all easier to sort out while they are still small. Premarital sessions are some of the most useful I do.

What Clients Say

"We're both in tech. We optimized everything: our calendars, our finances, our kids' schedules. The one thing we never optimized was our marriage. Dr. Verchick showed us that our relationship wasn't a system to debug. It was two people who had forgotten how to be vulnerable with each other. That shift changed everything." — San Diego

"My husband's company went public and instead of celebrating, we almost fell apart. The money, the attention, the new 'friends'. It put a pressure on us we weren't prepared for. Dr. Verchick helped us find solid ground again." — San Diego

"My husband runs a company. I run everything else. Somewhere along the way, we stopped being equals and started being a CEO and his support staff. Dr. Verchick helped him see it, and helped me stop enabling it. We're rebuilding as actual partners." — San Diego

Common Questions

We look fine to everyone else. Is therapy really for us?

Yes, and couples in exactly that spot are a lot of who I see. Looking fine and feeling connected are two different things. You do not need a crisis to justify wanting the marriage to feel close again.

What if we are mostly here to figure out whether to stay together?

That is a real and honest place to start. I do not push toward staying or leaving. I help you both get clear-eyed about what is actually happening, so whatever you decide, you decide it on purpose instead of by drift.

Does this work if the problem is distance, not big fights?

Often it works better. Quiet drift is very treatable once we name it. We rebuild the small daily habits, attention, warmth, and turning toward each other, that closeness is actually made of.

What will the first month look like?

Weekly sessions to start. Each of you gets heard, I tell you honestly what I see, and we begin changing the pattern in the room. Most couples feel some relief within the first few weeks.

How do we get started?

Reach out for a short consultation. We will talk about what is going on and whether working together makes sense. I am currently accepting new couples in San Diego.
