Warm, Experienced Help for Two People Who Run Everything but Each Other

Hello, I am Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years working with couples. A lot of the San Francisco couples I meet are very good at logistics. Two careers. A household. A calendar that runs like a company. What went missing is the part where you feel like a couple, not two people co-managing a life. On paper you are a team. It just does not feel that way anymore. That is a common place to land. It is also a very fixable one. I am currently taking new couples.

Couples Work Is My Specialty

I am a doctoral-level clinical psychologist. Couples are not one service among many for me. They have been the center of my work for 26+ years. That focus matters most when the pattern is old. It matters when anxiety or low mood has crept into the relationship. And it matters with sharp, capable people who can out-argue a therapist who is not paying attention. Whatever you are stuck in, I have sat with a version of it, and I know where the movement usually is.

Where Couples Are When They Call Me

  • You handle the logistics beautifully and feel like roommates who share a calendar

  • The same argument keeps looping, and neither of you can find the way out

  • Closeness and physical intimacy have quietly thinned, and you both miss it

  • One of you carries more of the invisible load, and the resentment is leaking out

  • You are not sure anymore if this is a rough patch or something bigger

My Approach

I am warm, and I am involved. I do not sit quietly and watch you run the same fight you have at home. I step in. When the pattern starts in the room, I slow it to the exact moment it goes sideways. The sharp tone. The shutdown. The jab back. Then we try it another way, together, until the better version holds. You leave with something to do, not just something to think about.

I draw on the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Discernment Counseling. I match the approach to the two people in front of me. No single method fits every couple, because no two couples are the same.

Getting Started

There is nothing to prepare. In the first session, each of you says how you see things, and both versions get equal room. I tell you honestly what I notice and what the work will take. We meet weekly to start, around your real schedule. Most couples feel the tension ease within the first few weeks. Fights end sooner. Repair comes faster.

Premarital Work

If you are engaged, the best time to do this is before the wedding. Money, families, and the different ways you each fight are all easier to work through while they are small. Premarital sessions are some of the most useful I do.

What Clients Say

"The family trust was destroying our marriage. Every decision about money turned into a battle about control. Dr. Verchick helped us separate the financial from the emotional and deal with each one properly." — San Francisco

"I gave up my career when we had kids. Ten years later, I was furious and I couldn't even explain why. Dr. Verchick helped me name it and helped my husband actually hear it. That conversation changed our marriage more than anything else we've tried." — San Francisco

"We're both engineers. We tried to troubleshoot our marriage like a systems problem. Dr. Verchick told us, kindly but directly, that our relationship isn't a codebase. That one comment changed more than a year of trying to fix things on our own." — San Francisco

Common Questions

How is this different from just venting to a friend?

A friend takes your side. My job is to help both of you get heard and then change the pattern that keeps repeating. You leave with something different to try, not just relief for an afternoon.

We are both slammed. How much time does this really take?

We start weekly, and sessions are by video (FaceTime, Signal, Zoom or whatever you prefer), so there is no commute. Many couples feel real movement within a handful of sessions. Deeper patterns take longer. We set goals early so you always know what we are working toward.

What if we mostly fight about logistics, money, and the calendar?

Those fights are almost never really about the calendar. They are about feeling unseen or carrying too much. We work on the thing underneath, and the logistics fights cool down on their own.

Do you take sides?

No. I am direct about what I see, but I am on the side of the relationship. Both of you will feel heard, and neither of you gets ganged up on.

Does couples therapy work if we are not in crisis, just distant?

Often it works better. Quiet distance is very treatable once we name it. We rebuild the small daily habits that closeness is actually made of, before the distance hardens into something worse.
