Couples Therapy in Carlsbad

Most couples wait years longer than they should to get help. By the time they call, the same fight has worn a groove, and the easiest thing in the house is silence. I'm Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years of experience, and helping couples out of exactly that place is the center of my work.

What Brings Carlsbad Couples In

A few arrive right after something broke: an affair discovered, a separation threatened, a fight that crossed a line. Most arrive with something harder to name. You handle logistics well together, but the warmth is gone. One of you wants more connection, the other feels constantly criticized, and every attempt to talk about it makes it worse. If any of that sounds familiar, you're in the territory I work in every day.

How I Work

I'm engaged and hands-on with the process. Together we slow down the moments where things go wrong, so you can both see what's actually happening: what gets triggered, what gets protected, what never gets said. Then we build new ways through those moments and practice them in session until they hold up at home. Insight alone doesn't save relationships. New experiences with each other do.

Why Work With a Psychologist

My training is doctoral-level clinical psychology, and couples have been my focus for 26+ years. That depth helps most when the marriage strain is woven together with anxiety, depression, old wounds from childhood, or when earlier rounds of counseling never reached the root.

What to Expect

Come as you are; nothing needs to be prepared or rehearsed. First session, I hear both sides fully, and you'll leave with my honest read on the pattern and a plan for the work. We meet weekly to start. Couples usually feel the temperature drop within the first handful of sessions: arguments end faster, and the dread around hard topics starts to lift.

I See Couples Across North County

I work with couples throughout coastal North County. If you're nearby, I also work with couples in Del Mar and Encinitas.

Engaged and Newly Married Couples

Couples in the engagement or newlywed years sometimes think it's too early for counseling. It's actually the highest-leverage time. Working through money, family boundaries, and how you fight, before those become entrenched, pays off for decades.

Common Questions

Is it too late if we've been struggling for years?

Rarely. Long-running patterns take more work to shift, but they do shift. What matters most is that both of you are willing to show up and try, even if one of you is more hopeful than the other right now.

Can counseling help if only one of us really wants to be there?

Yes. Reluctance is normal, and I don't treat a hesitant partner as the problem. Often the reluctant partner becomes the most invested once they see sessions are fair and practical, not about blame.

How long do couples usually work with me?

Enough weekly sessions to change the pattern, which for many couples means a few months. Couples repairing deeper breaches of trust often choose to work longer. We review progress openly as we go.

Do you see couples who aren't married?

Yes. Dating, engaged, partnered, married, remarried. The work is about the relationship, not the paperwork.
