Couples Therapy in Encinitas
Every couple has a pattern. When it's working, you barely notice it. When it's not, the same argument keeps resurfacing, the distance grows, and home stops feeling easy. I'm Dr. Jené Verchick, a licensed psychologist with 26+ years helping Encinitas couples understand their pattern and change it.
What Brings Encinitas Couples In
Some couples call me in crisis: an affair has come to light, someone said the word divorce, a fight went somewhere it had never gone before. Many more call about something quieter. The conversation has gone flat. Affection has thinned out. You're parenting well together but you've stopped being partners. Both deserve real help, and the quieter version is often the better time to start, before resentment has hardened.
How I Work
I work warmly and actively. In session, I help you catch the cycle as it's happening: the criticism that triggers the shutdown, the silence that reads as indifference, the pursuit that feels like pressure. Once you can both see the cycle, it loses a lot of its power, and we replace it with conversations that actually land. This isn't about deciding who's right. It's about changing what happens between you.
Why Work With a Psychologist
I'm a doctoral-level clinical psychologist, and couples have been the core of my practice for 26+ years. That training matters when the relationship struggle is tangled up with anxiety, depression, old family history, or a pattern that has survived previous attempts at counseling.
What to Expect
There's nothing to prepare. In our first session, each of you describes what's happening from your side, and I start mapping where the conversation breaks down. Couples usually leave that session feeling heard and clearer about what the work will look like. We meet weekly at first. Most couples notice the tone between them shifting within the first several sessions.
I See Couples Across North County
I also work with couples in Del Mar and Carlsbad.
Premarital Counseling and Newlywed Couples
If you're engaged or in your first years of marriage, this is the best time to build the habits that long marriages depend on. We work on money, in-laws, conflict styles, and expectations before they harden into resentments.
Common Questions
Do we attend sessions together or separately?
Mostly together, since the relationship is the client. Occasionally I'll meet with each of you individually as part of the work. We'll decide what fits your situation in the first session.
How soon will we notice a difference?
Most couples feel something shift within the first month: fights de-escalate sooner, conversations recover faster. Lasting change in trust and closeness takes longer, and the timeline depends on how long the pattern has been running.
What if we've already tried couples counseling and it didn't help?
That's common, and it doesn't mean your relationship is beyond help. Often it means the work stayed at the level of communication tips without reaching the pattern underneath. That deeper level is where I focus.
Is online couples therapy effective?
Yes. The research on video-based couples work shows outcomes comparable to in-person, and most couples find it far easier to keep sessions consistent, which is what actually drives progress.
