Couples therapy and marriage counseling in Oakland

Hello, I'm Dr. Jené Verchick. I'm a licensed psychologist, and for 26+ years, couples have been the heart of my work, not a line on a longer menu. If you found this page, you are probably tired of having the same conversation that never lands, or quietly wondering when the two of you stopped feeling like a team. I help couples turn that around, and I have done it long enough to know it is more possible than it feels right now.

Couples Work Is My Specialty

A lot of clinicians see the occasional couple between individual clients. I built my practice the other way around. Two people in a room, each certain they are right, each a little wounded, is where I do my best work. That focus matters when the pattern is old, when there is anxiety or depression woven through it, or when both of you are quick enough to talk circles around a therapist who is not fully present. I have heard your fight before, in a hundred variations, and I know the moves that actually loosen it.

The Patterns I See Most

Couples usually arrive with some version of these:

  • One of you chases the conversation, the other shuts it down, and you have both memorized your parts

  • The spark did not explode, it evaporated, and now you feel more like efficient roommates

  • Something broke trust, whether a single event or a slow drift of small letdowns

  • One of you is carrying more of the invisible weight and the resentment is leaking into everything

  • You are not sure anymore whether this is a rough stretch or the beginning of the end

What Working With Me Is Like

I am warm, and I am active. I do not sit quietly and let you run the same argument you have at home. I participate. When the pattern starts up in front of me, I step in, slow it down to the exact moment it goes sideways, and we try it a different way right there in the session. You are not hiring me to watch your marriage. You are hiring me to help you change it, and I stay in it with you.

I draw on the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Discernment Counseling, and I choose among them based on who you two actually are. No single method fits every couple, so I do not pretend one does.

Your First Few Sessions

You do not need to prepare anything. Early on, I want to hear how each of you sees it, in your own words, with equal airtime. I will be honest about what I notice and what I think the work ahead looks like. We usually meet weekly at first. Many couples tell me the fights get shorter and the recoveries get faster within the first several weeks, well before everything is "solved."

Thinking About Getting Married

If you are engaged, premarital counseling is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy for a marriage. The conversations most couples avoid, money, family, whose career bends, how you each fight, are so much easier to have now, before they harden into resentment.

What Clients Say

"We could win any argument and still feel like we lost. Dr. Verchick showed us we were treating a marriage like a debate. Once we stopped keeping score, we actually started hearing each other." — Oakland

"I did not think we needed 'real' therapy. We were not in crisis, just flat. A few months in, we are laughing again and I did not realize how much I had missed that." — Oakland

"After the affair, I honestly thought we were done. Dr. Verchick never pushed us to stay or go. She helped us tell the truth to each other, and we decided, together, to rebuild." — Oakland

"My wife handled everything at home while I traveled for work, and I did not see the cost until she was ready to leave. Dr. Verchick helped me actually get it, not just apologize. We are partners again." — Oakland

Common Questions

Can couples therapy work if only one of us is really committed to it?

Often, yes. When one partner shifts their half of the dynamic, the whole pattern has to move. Reluctant partners frequently warm up once they see it is not about blaming them.

We have been unhappy for years. Is it too late?

Length of trouble matters less than what is underneath it. Some of my most rewarding work is with couples who waited a long time. There is usually more to work with than either person expects.

Do you ever meet with each of us separately?

Sometimes, when it helps the work. The couple is my client, so anything that happens individually serves the relationship, and I am clear with both of you about how I handle it.

We tried counseling before and it did not help. Why would this be different?

A lot of couples tell me their last experience was a referee taking turns letting each person vent. My work is more active than that. We change the actual pattern in the room, not just talk about it.

Do you see clients in San Francisco?

Yes I do couples counseling and marriage therapy in San Francisco too.  I also see couples in Berkeley.
